The industrial history of carbon black began in the 19th century, when the demand for high-strength rubber products drove technological innovation. In 1839, Charles Goodyear's accidental discovery of vulcanization, coupled with the growing demand for durable tires, led to the experimentation of carbon black as a rubber reinforcing agent. Early carbon black production processes were simple: whale oil or vegetable oil was burned in a sealed chamber, and the carbon deposits were then carefully scraped from the chamber walls.
